NEW BILL COULD AFFECT PROPOSED OLUSTEE MONUMENT

Florida House Judiciary Chairman Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, filed a bill this week that could heavily influence the proposed Union monument at Olustee Battlefield. The measure would take away decision-making power over monuments at state parks away from the Florida Division of Recreation and Parks and place it in the hands of the Legislature. Baxley has expressed opposition to the proposed monument to Union war dead at the site of the Confederate victory.

CONDUCTOR LEADS TOP CHILDREN'S CHORUS

Fleming Island's Darren Dailey, artistic and executive director for the Jacksonville Children's Chorus, is in Tampa to conduct the prestigious All-State Elementary Chorus of the top fourth- and fifth-grade students from throughout the state. Dailey was selected by the Florida Elementary Music Educators Association for the Thursday-Friday event.

Shepherd's Center of Orange Park, a nonprofit interfaith organization for adults, is offering an eight-week session of "Adventures in Learning" for people looking to stay fit physically, spiritually, intellectually and socially on Mondays from Jan. 13-March 17 and Thursdays from Jan. 16-March 6. TRIO OF MAYORS MAKE THEIR POINTS

More than 200 people packed into the Beaches branch library Wednesday night to hear the three Beaches mayors give a summary of the accomplishments of their cities in the past year and what's on the burner for 2014. The mayors all reported that their cities are in good financial order and rattled off a slew of capital improvement projects to improve roads, drainage and other infrastructure. The meeting was sponsored by Beaches Watch.
