BULLYING in the workplace has existed since day dot, but laws to protect workers against the belittling behaviour have only come into effect this year.

This means Mackay businesses need to reshape their workplaces to ensure bullying is stamped out for good.

Before an amendment to the Fair Work Act 2009, McKays Solicitors associate solicitor Cyndel Muscat said there was a "black hole" in Australian legislation on bullying -- workers were not protected.

But the new anti-bullying laws, introduced in January, mean extreme bullying cases can now end up before a public hearing to be resolved.
