WRITERS are often told to "write what you know" but author Tracy Madden likes her readers to find veins of familiarity in her work.

The Brisbane-based author has wound the suburbs of West End and New Farm as well as the Sunshine Coast locations of Noosa, Eumundi and Montville into her recent release, Love is the Answer.

"I like to put real things in so people go, a[approximately]My God, I know where that is'," she said. "I try to make things real so that people, if they want to, can repeat the experience.

"I probably get up to Noosa a few times a year. I think it's just beautiful up there.

"We are so lucky in Queensland. There's so much to write about using real things as the backdrop."

Writing is Tracy's second career and she balances it with her occupation as an interior decorator.

She wrote her first book, The Essential Ingredient - Love, three years ago but believes the writer in her was always waiting her turn.

"Probably from when I was a little girl, I always thought it would be a lovely thing to do, to write, but your life goes down another beautiful path, and there's nothing wrong with that, but you wonder what happened to that dream," she said.

"I thought, a[approximately]There's things I want to do,' and I didn't want to be 90 and think back on my life and wonder, a[approximately]What if?'," she said.

In her 50th year, with her children married, and having become a grandmother, Tracy decided to find out, and locked herself away in her office and began writing.

Unlike aspiring writers who take courses, workshops, diplomas and degrees in the craft before they open their first chapter, Tracy plunged in with no formal training, just a love of reading teamed with enthusiasm and determination.

"I was scared of being told I wasn't good enough, or I had to write a certain way."

She believes her background in interior decorating gives her an edge for detail as a writer. …
