Motorist Badly Injured in One of Two Pile-Ups in Region

A MOTORIST suffered bleeding on the brain, a broken neck and fractured wrist and in one of two multi-car crashes that closed the A189 Spine Road.

The 34-year-old was last night in hospital, surrounded by his family, in a serious but not life-threatening condition. Police said that doctors had decided not to operate on the man, but were monitoring his condition.

The A189 Spine Road was closed for three hours as emergency services dealt with two separate crashes involving seven cars and vans.

The first crash, which a Northumbria Police spokesman said involved the 34-year-old's silver Vauxhall Astra, a Ford Fusion Zetec and a Mercedes flat-bed lorry, happened just after 11am on the A189 Spine Road, near Laverock Hill Road.

Nobody other than the driver of the Vauxhall Astra was said to have been injured.

And, 50 minutes later, just as the first crash was being cleared, a second crash involving four vehicles took place at the Bebside Roundabout near Blyth. …
