IHEAR once again from socalled 'friends-inside-apostrophes' (the sort who only call to relay bad news) that once again, I have been overlooked in Cameron's New Year Honours. I have long since given up personally poring over the lists of spinners, half-wits and quislings who managed to slither their way into Parliament; senior civil servants awaiting their list of alphabetical abbreviations that secure automatic acceptance in London Clubland; celebs, sports role models who-aren't-Scots (hard luck, Andy); and those of my colleagues who are Establishmentlackey trash-hacks masquerading as journalists.

Sour grapes? Perhaps: the greater my ego the less my peer group appears able to call me to mind. For years I furtively scanned the national newspaper 'Today's Birthdays' lists (I never made it into The Journal) until, alas, the years and a younger breed of editor dropped me by the wayside.
