Failure to Weed-Out Issue; Councillors Argue Solutions about Cleaners Double-Handling Weed

WHAT to do with the seaweed removed when the Yamba Rock Pool is cleaned has become a vexed question for the community and its representatives.

At Tuesday's Clarence Valley Council meeting the prospect of the seaweed removed from the pool at $1200 a pop being dumped back in on the next high tide was the subject of spirited debate.

The council heard the pool cleaners removed the weed and dumped it on Main Beach.

This was also the cause of some angst during the summer, with council staff fielding complaints from beach users saying this was adding to the amount of seaweed already in the water.

Cr Andrew Baker asked the general manager, Scott Greensill, if there were any regulations that stopped the cleaners from removing the seaweed from the area.

His question likened the situation to people returning flood debris to the river after a flood.

His question was not allowed, under the council Code of Meeting Practice, because it was not of a general nature and required specific knowledge from the general manager. …
