Vegetables Affordable with Some Great Bargains

BRISBANE Produce Market wholesalers are describing their fresh fruit and vegetable sales as a steady market this week with few surprises from previous weeks.

Vegetables are still affordable to serve, with the best bargains being onions, pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, carrots, celery, silverbeet, sweet corn and zucchini.

Asian vegetables have firmed in price slightly but imported asparagus is now reasonably priced.

Squash is expensive and other quality produce, such as cabbage, cauliflower and parsnip are a firm price. Broccoli, capsicum and snow peas are of a mixed quality.

Be cautious buying tomatoes this week with plenty of mixed quality and price on the shelves. No matter the variety, select ones that are firm, well formed, bright, of uniform colour and free from blemishes. Ripen them at room temperature then store in the refrigerator crisper.

Avocados have dropped to a firm price and will ease further in the days ahead. Iceberg lettuce is firmly priced, cucumbers are affordable, while shallots and mixed leaf salad are cheap. …
