COFFS Harbour's Mayor Denise Knight is headed for Japan after the city's councillors finally made up their minds to send an official delegation to Sasebo.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Coffs Harbour-Sasebo sister city relationship and while Coffs Harbour has been happy to host official Japanese visitors, it has been slow to organise reciprocal visits.

Coffs Harbour City Council has received four official delegations from Sasebo in the past 13 years, the most recent last year, while only sending two in return in 2002 and 2007.

Australia-Japan Society member Margaret Beckett addressed the councillors, saying Coffs Harbour was losing visiting Japanese English language students to Lismore, because of the slackening of sister city ties and this was an economic as well as social loss to the city.

The Mayor challenged her councillors to make up their minds about the future of Coffs Harbour's relationship with the Japanese coastal city of Sasebo this week, after Cr John Arkan suggested a Skype-style electronic exchange of civilities, using a giant screen, rather than an overseas trip by actual people. …
