RESIDENTS and businesses have given a positive response to an ambitious masterplan aimed at securing the future of Durham Tees Valley Airport. DTVA owner Peel Group yesterday published the results of a two-month consultation on its economic blueprint, which maps out a plan to transform the airport into a multi-use site with homes and business facilities.

More than 70% of respondents backed the vision and objectives set out in the blueprint, while 90% supported the expansion of general and business aviation facilities at DTVA. Six out of 10 said the airport should boost the development of local communities by providing mixed-use facilities and 98% agreed that international links to a hub airport, such as Heathrow, were important.

The consultation process also flagged up concerns over the loss of holiday flights and potential conflicts between different developments on the site. Some respondents wanted to see more focus on boosting passenger numbers, while 29% said the airport was not doing enough to address environmental issues such as concerns over noise and infrastructure capacity. …
