Cash Shortage Places Library Plans on Hold

PLANS for a public library in the Northern Beaches area have been put on hold through a lack of funding.

Mackay Regional Council communications manager Ken Furdek said the proposed library remained part of the council's 10-year Long Term Financial Forecast, but its construction hinged on sourcing available funds.

Mr Furdek said the council had been offered Federal Government funding of $6million, as a Labor election promise, in round five of Regional Development Australia funding, but this promise had not been honoured by the Abbott government late last year.

The council was mindful of the need for the library and was reviewing potential funding scenarios, he said.

"Funding sources are becoming increasingly competitive and we will continue to push the case in future government funding rounds."

Member for Dawson George Christensen said the former Labor government had let down the council by not following through with the funding. …
