SPENNYMOOR Town gained revenge for last week's defeat by Newcastle Benfield in the FA Carlsberg Vase, but it's doubtful if manager Steve Bowey was too concerned, writes MALCOLM PRATT.

Benfield are comfortably placed in the table, and victory against Leicestershire side St Andrews on Saturday is a much more important target.

The rematch at the Brewery Field didn't reach the entertainment heights of the first encounter and once again just one goal separated the sides. Early in the second period Keith Graydon produced a finish worthy of winning any match. He crashed a volley into the top corner of the net which gave Benfield goalkeeper Andrew Grainger no chance.

Spennymoor remain fourth-top, a point behind West Auckland Town, who had to settle for a draw in an entertaining game with Durham City. Stephen Turnbull headed home for the Citizens before Denis Knight buried a shot into the net. Leaders Celtic Nation were on cup duty and second-top Shildon had a free day. Ashington stay fifth and missed the opportunity to go third when they were held to a goalless draw by Morpeth Town. The game attracted a bumper crowd of 347 to Woodhorn Lane.

At the bottom of the table, Hebburn Town claimed only their 11th point out of a possible 99 in holding Crook Town, who were twice ahead courtesy of Chris Summers and Robbie Bird.

Channon North headed in Hebburn's first equaliser and just before the end Shaun Reay's strike was deflected into the goal.

Hebburn look doomed and the fight is on to avoid joining them and Billingham Town in Division Two next season.

Team Northumbria occupy the last relegation spot and they were unable to make the numerical advantage count at home to Bishop Auckland, who played for 76 minutes with 10 men after having Keiran Megran sent off. At this stage, Bishops led with an own goal by Ross McKeown and before the interval Peter Watling restored parity. …
