A GOOD piece of jewellery can be an excellent statement piece, a wonderful way to show you care or the perfect accompaniment to that stunning outfit.

Experts say that choosing jewellery is like selecting your wardrobe. It should reflect your personal style, be comfortable, stylish and fun.

Designer jewellery is evolving to suit the times, so although more traditional styles using precious gems and metals always will be popular, you now have the choice of incorporating new textures, colours and shapes by using natural materials such as wood, resin, ceramic and non-allergenic silver (Floral Open Locket with Gold and Rhodlite Gem, $178 from Simone Walsh).

The rules are changing too and designers, especially modern ones, are using asymmetrical and angular shapes to create a feeling of relaxed elegance or even careless chic if the mood dictates.

Before selecting a piece of jewellery decide on its purpose.

Will you wear it every day or just on special occasions and would you prefer something subtle or bold and beautiful?

Do you want traditional precious metals and stones or would you like artificial imitation pieces?

Budget, of course, is also important so settle on an amount before you start doing your research.

You may be willing to spend much more on an engagement ring for example than you would on an occasional choker.

When choosing pieces go for items that reflect your personality and consider things like the shape of your face and the size of your wrist and fingers.

You may not think it, but skin tone plays an extremely important part in whether jewellery looks good on you.

People with cool skin tones, usually signalled by blue-coloured veins and light blue or dark brown eyes, do better with white gold and silver metals with white pearls and diamonds and stones in shades of red, pink, purple and magenta. …
