THE quarter finals of the 2014 Scratch Matchplay Championships were held last Sunday, March 9 with the top eight from each grade battling it out throughout the morning.

In C grade there were some commanding wins, with veteran Kevin Donovan overcoming the young Ben Walker, 7 and 6, while Ian Guthrie defeated Gordon Bone, 5 and 4.

Peter McGrath and Chris Wilkes also came out on top in their respective matches.

In B grade, three matches came down to the last hole with Paul Harrison, Jim Kelleher and Shaun Kennedy all coming away victorious, while Daryl Docherty defeated his opponent Chris Vievers, 6 and 4.

However, the match of the day was undoubtedly the A grade match between club champion Nigel Weldon and Handicap Matchplay Champion Grant Rasmussen, which stole the crowd's attention towards the end of the round.

In what was an extremely close game throughout, the match came down the 18th hole with Mr Rasmussen leading, one up.

It was an amazing up and down by Nigel Weldon from the hazard to save par that put the pressure on Mr Rasmussen, and after he missed a short putt to close the match, both players were forced to play-off holes. …
