A Recipe for Kitchen Success; Doing Most of the Grunt Work Will Save You Some Serious Cash

Article excerpt

EVEN a basic kitchen renovation can be horrifyingly expensive. Do plenty of research, be ruthlessly practical, get your hands dirty and you may not only survive the experience but end up with a beautiful new kitchen.

It's hard to beat the wow factor of a swish new kitchen, but nothing takes the gloss off those dazzling glass splashbacks and shiny new appliances like the shock of a heart-stopping bill.

Renovating a kitchen can cost much more than you might imagine, with $30,000-plus price tags not unusual, especially if you leave it entirely in the hands of professionals.

Like most things in life, the way to slash costs is to take on a lot of the hard slog yourself.

By sourcing the products and trades, and project managing your renovation, you can save up to 40% of the cost.

That's no mean feat. Depending on the kitchen supplier you use, you may also have to independently source your benchtop. Ditto, the splashback.

Often your kitchen supplier can help you out with this, providing lists of their recommended suppliers, installers and tradies.

Stone benchtops and glass splashbacks look fantastic and are definitely low-maintenance, but if you have a tight budget, you might want to stick with the cheaper option of tiles and laminates.

Kitchen designers have few qualms about recommending today's high-quality laminates, which come in a range of cool designs and textures.

Today's vinyl floor tiles are similarly worth considering.

Sourcing appliances

Appliances can make a massive dent in the budget, so shop around.

Compare prices online, check eBay and discount warehouses, and maybe try for a cash discount. …
