THE wise heads at Doon Villa are confident their young midfield maestro is ready to make his mark in senior football.

Sam Kirk exploded into the Fraser Coast League last week when the Magpies unleashed the exciting 15-year-old for their first-division season opener.

One of the most talented midfielders to come through the club's junior ranks, Kirk showed in his senior debut he knows how to confuse opposition defences, with his zip, clinical precision and deft touches proving instrumental in the Magpies' 1-0 victory over Sunbury.

No one doubts Kirk is endowed with an extensive bag of skills, but it became apparent he is still a raw talent who can be pushed off the ball.

Speaking ahead of tonight's match against Tinana Kirk, who was born and raised in Maryborough, acknowledged he would be put under more pressure, but said he was confident he was up to the task.

"I'm starting to get my skills better and working hard to be a bit stronger on the ball," he said.

"In tight play I need to make the right passes and make sure I get the ball moving.

"This year is a great opportunity for me to establish myself in the side and show I deserve to be in the team."

But getting respect and earning your stripes in a team takes time and patience.

This is why the St Mary's College student won't stop chasing his goals. All the good ones have that - that obsessive streak of determination they can't shake off.

Kirk wants to contribute every game. He doesn't want to let his teammates down. …
