Tyne Angler Makes the Most of Final Week

Article excerpt

Byline: DAVID HALL

TODAY's the last day on the rivers until the season on running waters re-opens in two months' time.

It's been a terrific last week for Craig Scott, who fished the Tyne Anglers Alliance's stretch of the tidal Tyne at Newburn on Tuesday. Craig was alerted to the presence of dace dimpling on the surface at high tide and fished a waggler into the shoal only a foot below the surface. Before the tide changed and the fish moved on, the Newcastle 20-year-old had accounted for 78 dace plus two small roach all caught on single maggot.

The glorious weather has seen angling activity rewarded on the region's stillwaters. At The Angel, where water temperatures rose to 7.4 degrees, great catches have been recorded on all three lakes, with Ide over 2lb in abundance as well as tench, carp, skimmers, rudd and roach.

At Horton Grange, the big roach stocked from Fontburn last November have been making an appearance. WACAC club members are reporting regular 20lb bags and confirmed reports of nets over 50lb of specimen roach averaging 1lb.

Fish are also starting to feed in earnest at Aldin Grange, where Billy Todd from Spennymoor landed a good net of small carp plus plenty of Ide from the match lake, as did Paul Blenkley who fished red and white maggot over fishery pellets and ground bait. Norman Laing from Washington returned back to the Silver Lake and was rewarded with a 45lb bag of Ide and skimmers.

Sunderland FAC's Spring Starter match on Silksworth was won by Ian Foster with four bream for an encouraging 10lb 2oz. Roy Gillett had a mixed bag of 6lb 8oz to take second place while Adam Garrett made third spot with 2lb 10oz of roach. Further north Mark Trueman fished well to win the March Sunday Open on The Broom fishery at Annan with 29lb 2oz, ahead of Myles Watt with 14lb 4oz and Steve Royale with just 2oz less. …
