Osborne Set to Give Go-Ahead for PS150m Barking Rail Project

GEORGE OSBORNE will signal a PS150 million rail link to speed up the construction of thousands of new homes in the capital in his Budget this week, it is revealed today.

The Chancellor is expected to indicate he is keen to extend the Gospel Oak to Barking Line nicknamed the Goblin Line to Barking Riverside.

It would help unlock up to 11,000 new houses, offices and shops planned in a redevelopment that aims to transform a 350-acre site of industrial and brownfield land.

"We are looking at up to 11,000 homes for hardworking London families," a source told the Standard.

It follows Mr Osborne's weekend announcement that Ebbsfleet in Kent will become the site of the first new garden city in nearly a century. It will initially have 15,000 homes and will be linked to London by high speed rail.

Barking Riverside is London's largest regeneration site. At least 30 per cent of homes in the development will be for larger families and up to 40 per cent will be affordable. …
