GWYNETH PALTROW and Chris Martin split up after nearly 11 years of marriage because she did not want to return to live in London, it was claimed today.

The couple announced their "conscious uncoupling" in a statement on her lifestyle website Goop last night after rumours about troubles in their relationship.

They relocated from Belsize Park to Los Angeles last year, but the 37-yearold Coldplay frontman was apparently unhappy in the US, where the family also have a beachfront property in the Hamptons.

Paltrow, 41, reportedly wanted to raise their children Apple, nine, and Moses, seven, in America to be close to her widowed mother Blythe Danner.

The couple, who met in 2002 and wed in 2003, spent the majority of their marriage at their PS7 million house in north London. They bought the home from Kate Winslet for PS2.5 million and knocked it together with the house next door. But they left last summer for California.

A friend said: "Chris never took to living in LA. He missed being so far from the rest of the band and his friends and it put more pressure on them as a couple because Gwyneth felt she'd done her time in London."

They said in a joint statement that they had been trying to work through their problems both together and individually, adding: "We have come to the conclusion that, while we love each other very much, we will remain separate."

As news of the split emerged, Paltrow and Martin were apparently on a family holiday on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

The singer was also said to have given Paltrow a break-up gift a painting of a bird in flight by Mila Furstova to mark a new freer stage in their lives. "Foremost, they want the kids to see they mean business about remaining a family," a source claimed.

The divorce could turn out to be one of the costliest in recent times. They are collectively worth PS89 million and sharing their assets could prove particularly difficult because both have multi-million incomes. Paltrow reportedly receives around PS10 million per movie and supplements her movie fortune by endorsing select brands. …
