Kiwi Colt Saddles Up for Clash with Australian Derby Rivals

KIWI colt Puccini will put his Australian Derby favouritism on the line when he steps out on a heavy track in tomorrow's $500,000 Group One Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in Sydney.

The son of Encosta De Lago has built up an imposing record in New Zealand, winning four of his last five starts including the Waikato Guineas (2000m) and Avondale Guineas (2100m) in February, and the NZ Derby (2400m) at his last outing on March 1.

He has beaten home Rising Romance in his last two wins, and although opinions have been divided on the strength of his opposition, the filly's trainer Dean Logan said he was confident the form would measure up in Sydney.

"They're both running the times and doing things that only good horses can do," Logan said.

"I can't see Puccini not being competitive in Sydney, and I can't see our filly not being competitive either. They're both pretty good."

Timeform figures back up Logan's argument.

Puccini has a rating of 121, which makes him the highest New Zealand Derby winner of the modern era. …
