Five-Piece Are Set to Light Up Music Scene; Ahead of Their Charity Debut EP Launch, SARAH JEFFERY Catches Up with the Cities We Light

ONE band hoping to stand out from the crowd on the local music scene is The Cities We Light.

The instrumental five-piece, who hail from Newcastle, do not have a frontman and were nervous about how North East audiences would react to their unconventional line-up.

Guitarist Jake Woods says: "We've been absolutely blown away by the positivity people show our band. Starting out we really weren't so sure how we would go down - it's not the done thing to play the bars of Newcastle without a singer.

"We were actually pretty nervous, but from the outset people have had nothing but great things to say to us. We're starting to see familiar faces at gigs and make friends with some good people who are enjoying what we do."

Since coming together two years ago, the band have been forging a path for themselves in the rock market, and have been gigging relentlessly.

The band are passionate supporters of local music and have built up strong ties with other bands doing the rounds at the moment, including Love The Sinner and Great Man.

Jake adds: "There are a lot of very good bands doing the rounds, but there's definitely room for growth in the amount of support for local, especially rock, music. Love The Sinner, Red Letters and Great Man Theory are all excellent bands that we've shared the stage with recently. There are a lot of good things happening in the background and it would be great to get them heard to a wider audience."

The Cities We Light went through the usual process of forming a band, trying out different line-ups, before settling on its current one in January 2013.

Completing the quintet with Jake is Bryan McClements (guitar), Pete Stokoe (guitar), Dean Warwick (bass) and Michael Snowball (drums).

Even though The Cities We Light are a fledging band, they have always been very clear in terms of their sound and making music they enjoy.

Jake says: "We've always had a pretty clear indication of what we wanted to sound like. …
