Leisure Facilities Get New Operator

TWO swimming pools and a leisure centre have been transferred to a private operator as the latest stage of responses to council budget cuts.

Newcastle City Council has agreed to transfer Eldon Square Leisure Centre, Gosforth Pool and Outer West Pool to North Country Leisure, which operates a number of former council leisure centres and swimming pools in Northumberland.

As part of its three-year budget announced last year the council said that a number of leisure facilities across the city would have to close unless it could find an alternative provider to take these over.

The council's cabinet has now agreed to progress negotiations with North Country Leisure, which runs centres in a number of Northumberland towns, including Ashington, Hexham, Blyth and Cramlington.

Coun Hazel Stephenson, cabinet member for communities at Newcastle City Council, said: "This is a major milestone and the start of an exciting new future for leisure in Newcastle. …
