SOMETIMES people talk about gardening as though it's just a question of maintaining the status quo. As though it just has to be maintained.

What a dull business if that was all there was to it. The excitement is that everything changes. That each year is a new, different 12 months and though some jobs always have to be done at the same time and in the same way, there are new things to be learned about them, experiments to be made.

CHIT FOR TAT: SPUDS are always planted the same way, year in, year out, but there are new varieties to try, new suggestions about growing them in containers or sacks or on top of the soil under plastic.

The potatoes that have been chitted in boxes on the top shelf in the greenhouse are just about ready to go out and if they're planted deep, even if we have frost, they should survive. …
