Students Take on Leadership Roles
STUDENTS transitioning to high school from their primary school leadership positions often find themselves going from the 'top of the pile' to the bottom.
Toowoomba State High School has changed all that with junior secondary initiatives in student leadership providing a seamless opportunity for school captains to take on leadership in their first days of high school.
As part of the year leadership structure in place since 2013, students in every year level are appointed to leadership roles assisting the year coordinator and working with the cohort to develop participation in school life.
And the opportunity for students in their first term of high school to develop as year leaders presents the youngest students with an excellent opportunity to continue to shine.
Primary School Captains automatically are appointed for term one as year leaders. This year there are so many, they have been made leaders for the whole semester.
In 2014 nine primary captains are assuming the important role in the school. Taking on duties such as running assemblies, meeting with the Head of Junior Secondary to review transition programs and the start of year orientation program as well as taking their place at the table of the Student Representative Council, these young leaders are relishing the opportunity to take part in decision making and being active leaders in school life. …
