A SUSPECT appeared in court accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman who got in his car thinking it was a taxi.

Mohammed Malik is accused of snatching and molesting the woman after picking her up following a night out in Newcastle.

Prosecutors claim he took her to a secluded street in the west end of the city and sexually assaulted her.

Malik made his first appearance at Newcastle Crown Court accused of kidnap and sexual assault.

The charges were not put to the 30-year-old, who appeared on a video-link to Durham Prison, where he is remanded in custody.

Julian Smith, prosecuting, said: "These are allegations which are grave in nature.

"Whether or not it was a misapprehension by a drunken victim, he led her to believe it was a taxi.

"She got into the car with him and, we say, was thereafter attacked.

"There was force used and she managed to make her escape and was helped by passers-by, to their considerable credit. …
