A CONTROVERSIAL beach house constructed of shipping containers has won the major prize at the 2014 Sunshine Coast Regional Architecture Awards.

It was one of 12 outstanding projects honoured by the Australian Institute of Architects last night at Noosa Heads.

Winners of the awards, held at Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa, Noosa, will progress to the Queensland Architecture Awards to be announced in Brisbane on June 20.

Twenty-two projects were entered in the awards with 12 projects being awarded regional commendations by the jury.

In addition to a regional commendation, The Beach Box by OCE Group Architects was presented with the Gabriel Poole Award for building of the year.

The judging jury considered the utilisation of once-used shipping containers provided "a robust and cost effective opportunity to re-engage with the beach culture and mixed-use zoning of Buddina.

"The grouping provides separate private zones with pop-outs for greater internal widths, linking with decks and courtyards and a simple skillion roof over entry referencing modest beach house vernacular," the jury said.

"This playful use of containers engages simple yet appropriate interiors and integration with the landscape. …
