Falcons Coach Hoping for Shades of Big Mal

RUGBY LEAGUE: Having seen firsthand the talent of Mal Meninga, Sunshine Coast Falcons coach Ivan Henjak is hoping to get the best out of the Maroon great's nephew.

Joe Meninga will debut for the Sunshine Coast Falcons against the Burleigh Bears at Stockland Sunshine Coast Stadium tonight.

With Henjak having played alongside big Mal at the Canberra Raiders in the 1980s, it is fitting he has handed Joe his Intrust Super Cup debut.

Joe, the son of Mal's brother Jeff, has come through the Falcons' junior system and earned his chance after impressing for Nambour in the local league this year.

Henjak said the last thing he wanted to do was put pressure on Meninga ahead of his first game in first grade, but he could see a similarity between the 21-year-old and his famous uncle.

Both are big, powerful outside backs and Meninga has been named on the Sunshine Coast's left flank because of his size and speed.

"He's been at Nambour for the start of the season, he did a pre-season at the Tweed (Heads Seagulls) but he decided to come back to us," Henjak said. …
