Cats Boss Requires Time, Whatever Happens

IF Sunderland tumble into the Championship, Gustavo Poyet must take a healthy share of the blame.

The Black Cats boss has gone rogue in recent weeks, starting with a team selection at Hull City that - to put it mildly - made it more difficult for Sunderland to book the return trip to Wembley that the city craved.

Santiago Vergini's recall, the failed Ignacio Scocco experiment and Adam Johnson's curious omission on Monday have posed questions about Poyet that he had dodged before this poorly-timed drop in form. Michael Graham of the Roker Report put it best when he charitably said Poyet has suffered a "loss of clarity" in recent weeks.

However, much he was able to revive a season that was flatlining under the absurd Paolo Di Canio, these are valid questions for Poyet to answer. Whatever else has happened in this incredible campaign, the former Brighton boss will have failed in the objective set for him when he took over if Sunderland are relegated. …
