Minister 'Owes Apology'

WHITSUNDAY Ratepayer's Association is requesting Local Government Minister David Crisafulli "apologise" to Mayor Jennifer Whitney following his public criticism of her decision to hand over the reins to councillor Jan Clifford at a council meeting last month.

Association spokesperson Russell Cook said that under the Local Government Act 2009 delegation of mayoral responsibilities was allowed and Cr Whitney "deserved an apology".

Three councillors walked out of a public meeting on March 26 after Cr Whitney appointed Cr Clifford to chair the meeting while she was on annual leave, a duty that would normally be performed by the deputy mayor.

Following the meeting, Mr Crisafulli criticised the Mayor's decision, saying she couldn't pick and choose who chaired the committee.

Sections 258 of the act, available online, states "a mayor may delegate the mayor's powers to another councillor of the local government" while section 12 of the act states "a councillor who is not the mayor may perform the mayor's extra responsibilities only if the mayor delegates the responsibility to the councillor". …
