WINNER DURHAM & WEARSIDE Emerald Biogas Ltd, Newton Aycliffe COMMERCIAL food waste digestion facility Emerald Biogas, based in Newton Aycliffe, is the first food recycling and re-using facility in the region.

The firm uses the region's food waste to generate electricity, heat and biofertiliser and it first supplied energy to the national grid in March 2013.

Emerald Biogas employs eight people and has a turnover projected at PS500,000 for 2013. It has ambitions to invest PS20m into the company, quadrupling its size and capacity in the next five years. Its PS8m facility has been specifically designed to recycle leftover food and unsold products, generated by commercial organisations. It counts Greggs and Coopland Bakeries as among its customers.

RUNNERS UP Goodfellow and Goodfellow, Peterlee: Commercial kitchen equipment suppliers Goodfellow and Goodfellow was first set up in 2011 and had a turnover of PS1.8m in 2013. The company supplies kitchen equipment, tableware and workwear to high-end clients including five-star hotels. The business has ambitious plans to raise revenue of between PS1m and PS2m over the next two years.

Lingotot Ltd, Consett: Languages experts Lingotots provides people the opportunity to set up a franchise in teaching French, Spanish or Mandarin to schools, nurseries and parents. The business was set up in 2011 with two pilot franchises in the North East which proved so successful the firm now has 11 franchises across the UK. The company has a turnover of PS93,000.

WINNER TEESSIDE PJA Distribution Ltd, Thornaby THIS firm, which produces and distributes electronic device accessories, was established in 2010.

Starting out with one part-time employee, by 2013 PJA Distribution had growh n to 50 staff. The company has recently invested heavily in its infrastructure and more than 70% of its sales now come from markets outside of the UK.

The company is a keen participant in the Government's Youth Contract programme.

It has integrated this work experience scheme into its recruitment process and in the past 18 months it has recruited 11 members of staff through this method. …
