SYDNEY trainer Gary Portelli believes Rebel Dane is the forgotten horse in tomorrow's Group One $2.5million TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

The four-year-old is the only runner in the 18-horse field that has not raced this season, apart from the emergency, Peron.

But Rebel Dane looked primed for a first-up tilt when a close second to the speedy Zaratone, after sitting wide throughout with race jockey Glen Boss in the saddle, in a 900m trial on a heavy track at Rosehill Gardens on March 31.

Boss has been effusive in his praise of Rebel Dane, and suggested the four-year-old, who is unbeaten first-up and handles slow going, was in the top five sprinters in the country after the hit-out.

Portelli said he was convinced his stable star was up to Group One level when a close fifth to Buffering in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last October.

"The Manikato was the run that gave me confidence that he is up to it at weight for age, if he ran a shocker in that race we would never be here in this position," Portelli told TVN. …
