GYMPIE toddler Arley Baker has defied the odds more times than he will ever remember.

When his mother Michelle was just 20 weeks' pregnant, her waters broke but Arley managed to defy nature and hang on until he was delivered by caesarean at 33 weeks.

Then, when he was six months old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition that inhibits growth and development.

He has defied that prognosis as well.

The condition involves the absence of part of a chromosome known as 20p13.

Arley is the only child in Australia to suffer from it.

Essentially, where most babies have an instinct to walk, sit up and swallow, he had to be taught.

Before Arley was diagnosed, Michelle said doctors noticed he had been "failing to thrive".

She was warned that speaking, crawling, walking and even feeding himself were things Arley may never do.

"They said he'd never walk," she said. "It was devastating; it was hard to hear that might be the outcome. …
