IF coastal towns can make it through the torrential rain and strong winds Cyclone Ita is expected to bring until tomorrow, meteorologists believe the state will likely to be spared from the kind of devastation unleashed by former foes Yasi and Oswald.

As the cyclone, reduced from a monster storm to a Category 1, headed for the Whitsunday Coast last night, Weatherzone Meteorologist Brett Dutschke said while much of Queensland would be wet and windy, the most dangerous period had passed.

He believed the kind of rain, which had shut down Townsville at the weekend, was almost over and likely to decrease in coming days.

As the rain depression continues to move south, communities as far south as the Fraser and Sunshine Coasts could cop downpours of up to 50mm at a time.

From tomorrow, further flooding will be unlikely but showers are expected as the coastal areas experience any "lingering, weak instability". …
