SOUVENIRS, jet lag and a swag of ideas.

As royals Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge arrive for their big tour of Australia, Mackay Regional Council Mayor Deirdre Comerford and chief executive officer Barry Omundson have wrapped up their own tour of England. The pair travelled to the UK on a whirlwind trip to learn more about cost-effective councils and the use of shared services.

Mr Omundson described the five-day mission as an "eye-opening, motivating" experience.

The duo visited Harrow Council in north-west England, which provides services and facilities for 250,000 people and 90,000 ratepayers.

Mr Omundson said the council had saved about $20million a year (Australian dollars) in the past nine years through efficiencies and better utilisation of resources.

"A change in the set-up to their IT department alone resulted in immediate savings of about $180,000 a year in postage and paper," he said. …
