Budget to Reflect UK Cuts

A FORECAST of tough times has led to razor games at Mackay Regional Council.

Barry Omundson, who has been council chief executive officer for just over a year, is continuing his journey to cut costs and slash unnecessary expenditure.

Yesterday he and Mayor Deirdre Comerford fronted the media about their recent "study tour" of the UK.

They were well aware of the irony of taking an overseas trip as they endeavoured to learn how to save money.

But Mr Omundson said ratepayers could rest assured; it was worth it.

Local governments in the UK have had their budgets hacked in half, as funding from top-tier government dried up.

This forced UK councils into a position where reducing costs was a necessity.

"The level of scrutiny they are under from the public and their funding being cut in half... it forced them to do things you would never have considered doing in the past," he said. …
