OUR rich tapestry of North East culture was royally rewarded last night at The Journal Culture Awards 2013.

tbr ydhpvt Sage Gateshead was the place to be for anyone with an interest in the region's artistic community - and you'd struggle to find anyone who doesn't fit into that particular pigeon hole judging by the hundreds of people who came out to applaud the very best of what had been created in the North East last year.

It was the eighth such ceremony and the first to be held in Gateshead.

apLt WWb KMPt Wet House - Paddy Campbell's play which was produced as part of Live Theatre's 40th birthday celebrations, was the evening's big winner. While Paddy picked up the award for Writer of the Year, actor Joe Caffrey beat off strong competition from Kathryn Williams and Lake Poet, Martin Longstaff - to be crowned Performing Artist of the Year for his turns as the unforgettable Dinger in Wet House and Dad in Lee Hall's Cooking With Elvis, which returned to its Live Theatre stomping ground, as part of the birthday celebrations.

WCt a Not only that, but the dark comedy, which was set in a hostel for alco-the dark come a hostel for alcoholics, d also scooped the Performance of the Year award.

Another big win on the night came in the form of the Special Contribution award, popularly bestowed on the Royal Northern Sinfonia, in recognition of the orchestra's place in the region's cultural landscape.

When it came to the performances on the bill, the audience were truly spoiled. Folk collective The Mighty Doonans kicked things off in suitable style and were quickly followed by performance poet and Journal columnist, Kate Fox, who had kindly written a bespoke poem - featuring all 36 finalists.
