IN OUR community we recognise the brokenness and pain of those who journey with cancer and dementia; those who live with some form of mental illness; those who struggle with drug addiction. The brokenness of those who want to work, but are unable to find it; those who work in jobs they hate; those who live in relationships in which there is deep unhappiness; those who grieve deeply the death of someone they love; those who long for friendship. Clearly brokenness exists in many forms.

So, where is God in the midst of this brokenness?

I think the Cross gives us a clue, for I believe God was uniquely present in the man we call Jesus and when it came to the crunch, God was with him: sharing in the humiliation of being unjustly accused, and being abandoned by his friends; sharing in the agony of being beaten and crucified.

I believe in a God who grieves injustice, and inspires men and women to bring about transformation. I believe in a God who weeps with us when we are hurting, and gives us the strength to keep going. …
