The English Concert: Stabat Mater, Sage Gateshead EASTER week brought chamber orchestra The English Concert, conducted by French-Canadian Bernard Labadie, and the two Baroque specialist Italian soloists, soprano Roberta Invernizzi and contralto Sonia Prina.

It was a world-renowned lineup meriting a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 (and available for the next few days on iPlayer).

Composers through the ages have used the words of the 13th Century Marian poem Stabat Mater Dolorosa (the sorrowful mother stood) - a meditation on the suffering of Mary as she stood at the foot of the cross as Jesus was crucified - and it was the settings of two of the great Italian Baroque composers, Giovanni Pergolesi and Antonio Vivaldi, which were showcased.

But it was far from being just relentlessly slow and solemn Baroque music in the minor key.

The performances were engaging, especially that of Sonia Prina, with her rich tone and very expressive manner. …
