Rain Gives Fire Breather; Volunteers Use the Gap to Put in Fire Breaks

THE good rain across the Bundaberg region in the past few weeks has made life easier for the Queensland Rural Fire Service volunteers.

Bundaberg acting area director Phil Williams said the rain had been very welcome.

And he did not think it would add much to the fuel load heading into the cooler months.

Mr Williams said the rain had given crews the chance to get on the ground and put in fire breaks.

"It's good to burn while there's moisture about," he said.

"It means the grass doesn't burn down to its roots and dead wood doesn't catch fire as easily."

Mr Williams said around the Bundaberg region the fire season would probably start in mid to late August.

"During the cool autumn months we will be able to do cool burns," he said.

It also gave the fire service the chance to do strategic burns, such as along road verges, in conjunction with agencies such as the Transport and Main Roads Department.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey has urged landholders to get ready for the bushfire season by reducing fire risk on their properties. …
