Bystanders Rescue Man from Car Sinking in Pond

A couple of Good Samaritans rescued a 68-year-old man trapped in his sinking car after he crashed into a retention pond at the Florida 19 Walmart in Palatka.

Ronald Register of Hawthorne somehow drove his Mercury sedan over a curb, through a fence and into the pond about 1 p.m. Monday, according to the Palatka Police Department. It was about 25 feet into the pond and sinking.

Curtis Smith, 28, and at least one other unidentified man dove in and found Register trapped as the car was about to became totally submerged. They freed Register from his seat belt and pulled him from the car, police said.

Register was transported to the Putnam Community Medical Center for treatment and is in good condition.

WOMAN, MAN CHARGED WITH ROBBERY, MURDER

A 21-year-old woman and 27-year-old man were arrested Monday following a Sunday killing in what investigators deemed a drug deal robbery attempt in Palatka, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Rebecca Christine Hicks of Welaka and Brandon Keith Nunley of Palatka are charged with murder and robbery in Sunday morning's shooting death of 28-year-old Antonio Lanorris Mulberry on Augusta Road, the Sheriff's Office said.

Mulberry, a San Mateo resident, was shot to death about 12:30 a.m. He had been arrested 11 times in Putnam, mostly on drug charges, jail records show.

MAN WHO DIED IN FIERY CRASH IS IDENTIFIED

A driver killed March 23 in a fiery crash on Arlington Road while fleeing from police has been identified as a 28-year-old Jacksonville man, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Jermaine Lechardo Plummer, whose last known address was on Knottingham Trace Lane in the Sandalwood neighborhood, was speeding and running red lights before officers got involved in the 2:30 a.m. chase, according to Investigations Division Chief Adam Brown.

The chase began when a police officer at Bert and Lillian roads saw a car speeding north on Arlington before it ran two red lights, police said. The officer tried to catch the car but lost sight of it until it careened off the road, hit a retaining wall and became airborne before crashing and bursting into flames at Lillian Road.

MAN FOUND SLAIN IN HIGHLANDS IDENTIFIED

Jacksonville police Monday morning identified a man slain in Highlands Friday night as Purnell Carlos McMillan, 40, of DePaul Drive.

Police found McMillan fatally shot on the sidewalk near his home about 11 p.m. No other details were released.
