Stalwarts Turn Back Clock; Queensland Racing Media Association off and Running

WE live in a changing world.

Back when I first became involved working in racing in the 1970s, there were any number of journalists writing for lots of newspapers and magazines that covered the three codes of racing. Radio and television covered racing quite extensively as well.

Nowadays, there are fewer racing writers or journalists around. And apart from Sky Racing and radio TAB, coverage of racing in the electronic media is almost non-existent.

In its heyday, the Queensland Racing Writers Association was a body which had a large number of members. The association folded as the number of people working in racing media dropped.

Recently, a few stalwarts of the old QRWA formed the Queensland Racing Media Association.

Well known names Bart Sinclair, Nathan Exelby and Mark Oberhardt are involved. And myself.

The QRMA wishes to be effective and includes people who write mainly for websites.

Liaising with racing's controllers to keep the public informed of important events and, hopefully, progress is a mission for the QRMA.

To this end, a bi-monthly meeting with the board of Racing Queensland has been arranged and the first meeting will be held on Monday.

Michael Byrne QC is the chair of the Racing Queensland Greyhound Board and a member of the overseeing racing board. He will attend Monday's informal meeting and I'll take the opportunity of asking him for an update on a couple of important issues for greyhound racing.

One is the proposed track for Logan and what has transpired since the announcement six weeks ago by the State Government that the project would be funded to the extent of $12 million. And I'm sure lots of people would like to know whether an announced date of next month for the start of construction is going to happen at Logan.

Byrne's fellow board member Chris Williams recently stated in this newspaper than the plan to relocate greyhound racing in Ipswich from the showgrounds to Bundamba racecourse would be included in the next phase of infrastructure funding. …
