Renee Rallies Troops for the Fight against Cancer; Gympie's Renee Downman Is the Face of This Year's Gympie Relay for Life, Knowing Well How Arduous the Battle against Cancer Is

JANUARY 2013 and Gympie woman Renee Downman was feeling on top of the world.

She was an in-shape fitness instructor, enjoying a fulfilling career and had everything in front of her.

This all changed when Renee discovered an unusual lump on her left hand, later diagnosed by doctors as Ewing's Sarcoma - an aggressive form of cancer that attacks bone or soft tissue.

It was at this moment Renee discovered one of the most frightening realities of cancer.

"Cancer isn't something that discriminates," she said.

"I was a fit and healthy fitness instructor, but it can touch anyone."

Renee underwent surgery to remove the cancerous lump on her hand and then faced 14 months of extensive chemotherapy.

The courageous woman's final round of treatment last month was a major milestone and now she is determined to celebrate life as a cancer survivor.

Renee's big smile is back and her celebration as a survivor will involve this year's Relay For Life. …
