WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16 - BEACH RUN, STEPS, RAMPS AND SPRINTS AFTER Monday's superb weight loss results, I knew the confi-dence of all seven finalists would be high, so I threw in the toughest session of the process so far. We all met on Longsands Beach, Tynemouth, for a workout that involved a 1.5 mile run along the beach. Unfortunately the tide was in so they had to run on fairly soft sand with a slight sideways slope making running much harder than normal.

This was the longest distance many of the finalists had run in years, a few of them had a brief walk but they never stopped moving and all completed the distance.

Of course this was just the start, after a short rest, they all walked or ran up and down stairs for five minutes, once again without stopping. I made them concentrate on placing the whole foot on the step therefore avoiding too much pressure through their calves and Achilles tendons.

Next they moved on to the long ramp from the beach up to the road and sprinted as quick as possible either from the bottom or half way. This was tough as their legs were already drained. The deal was if any of them walked they would all have to do it again, needless to say there was no walking!

Finally we moved to King Edward's Bay and the notorious steps. I used to bring Mark Allison 'Run Geordie Run' here to train leading up to his runs across USA and Australia. To finish, the finalists completed the near 200 very steep steps, twice.

This session was incredibly hard and it was the finalists' first major outside running/aerobic test. They acquitted themselves brilliantly and are starting to win the mental battle which is needed to complete these tough workouts. Well done all!

SATURDAY, APRIL 19 - BEACH BOOTCAMP IT was back to the beach for the second time in three days. Their legs were still suffering from Wednesday's session, but after a good warm-up the seven were back in the swing. …
