Ukraine Crisis Brings Index Down 75.8 Points; FTSE 100

LONDON'S FTSE 100 Index ended the week down 75.8 points, or 1.12%, to 6712.7 amid renewed uncertainty about the situation in Ukraine. Diplomats remained on edge after Crimea's parliament accelerated plans to secede and join Russia.

The weakening of London's main market on Friday came despite strong US non-farm payrolls data, a key measure of the health of the world's largest economy.

The US economy added 175,000 jobs in February, well above the average estimate of 150,000. The betterthan-expected results could potentially ease fears of an abrupt slowdown in US economic growth and keep the Federal Reserve on track in reducing, or 'tapering', its monetary stimulus.

However, the unemployment rate for the month increased from a fiveyear low of 6.6% to 6.7%, above expectations.

Fed officials, including chair Janet Yellen, have viewed the recent weakness in payrolls, which has been replicated in data such as retail sales, industrial production and home building, as largely weather-related and temporary. …
