Speedy Atkin Takes Title; Biggest Speedway Event to Be Held in Gympie Delivers Production Sedan Crown to Talented Local

SPEEDWAY: Fittingly, the biggest speedway event ever held in Gympie has been won by a local driver, with Tim Atkin holding on in a thrilling finish to win the Australian Production Sedan title on Saturday.

After topping the times in practice on Thursday, a mixed night for Atkin had him in fourth place on points after the opening round of heats on Friday.

Two-time winner of the national title, Victoria's Stephen Laidlaw, led the points after winning two of his heats and finishing second in his other one, with Mick Hamon, Doug Rigby, and Atkin close behind him on the standings.

After Hamon won his final heat on Saturday night, the West Australian secured pole position for the 40-lap A Main title race, with Laidlaw's third place in his heat enough to ensure a front row start; while Atkin and Rigby would start from the second row of the grid.

As the lights went green, Hamon, Laidlaw and Atkin didn't give each other an inch, before Atkin found a way past Laidlaw to move into second place on lap 13. …
