Drivers Warned to Belt Up; Police Stunned by Number of People Caught Not Wearing Seatbelts

CLARENCE Valley motorists are being urged to buckle up for safety after more than 1000 people in the state were busted not wearing seatbelts throughout the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends.

However, police figures from the Anzac Day long weekend show a general improvement in driver safety from last year.

In the period last week from Thursday to Sunday, five people died on New South Wales roads, which was on par with the same period last year.

Throughout the state, there were 501 major crashes (down 136 from last year), resulting in 176 people being injured (down 38).

Police conducted 173,038 breath tests (up 19,881 compared to 2013), resulting in 235 people being charged with drink driving (down 77), while 387 people were caught not wearing seatbelts (up five).

A further 3086 people were issued infringement notices for speeding, while police also issued 5054 infringements for other offences, including mobile phone, helmet and registration offences. …
