IT'S good to see a hard stance when it comes to the law and the State cracking down on illegal activity.

But with cost-cutting measures taking away facilities such as Grafton Jail, it's clear there are two different agendas when it comes to law and punishment and they don't line up.

It's great to come down on offenders but what happens when there's nowhere for them to carry out their sentence?

Hang on, there is. As former jail governor John Heffernan says, 100 beds could be opened up at Grafton Jail quickly.

There's a great deal that has been said over the past couple of years about the closure of the Grafton Jail and its impact on the Clarence Valley.

The job losses, the money then lost from the local economy and the people who have had to move on from the community, the impact was felt then and it's still being felt, according to many people in the community. …
