THE 50 best chippies in the country have been revealed - and we've got some of them right here in the North East.

Fry magazine ran a competition to find the best fish and chip shops in the UK. With 600 entrants, they had to narrow it down to 50 - and Tyneside chippies made the cut.

Colman's of South Shields - a perennially popular chippy that was last year voted the best in the country by Esquire magazine - was on the list along with Smith's Chippy, South Shields. Also on the list were Maguire's, Rowlands Gill, Easington Village Fish Bar and Overseas, Bishop Auckland.

Reader Kristen McDougal said: "Gormans in Denton Burn. Since moving down south, I can't get a proper fishcake!" Lorraine Willis said: "Gormans at Cowgate - my hubby makes a 50-mile round trip for them!" In North Tyneside and the coast, Bills on Victoria Crescent Cullercoats was mentioned. Amie Waugh said of Bills: "Bills' fish and chips at Cullercoats. I always go there when I take the kids to the beach - lovely food."

The Fast Fry chip shop on the Coast Road in Wallsend was also mentioned, along with Harbour View Fish and Chip shop on Beresford Road, Seaton Sluice. …
