Friers Turn Up the Heat

SUPERBOATS: Mackay brothers Chris and Brendan Frier are in "white knuckles" territory as they compete in their Navy Health boat against the big boys in the Australian Superboats series.

A complete overhaul and a new set of twin 750hp engines give the boat a capacity of 1500hp and some serious speed, and it's now competing in the top Class One category.

"We don't know for sure the top speed but it's up around 130mph (210kph)," Chris said.

"We were doing maybe 115mph before. You can notice the speed difference."

The Friers won both races of the opening event of the series at Newcastle, despite electrical problems ruling them out of pole shootout racing.

But a spectacular "loss" on the last turn in the second race underlines the dangers.

They went into the last turn with enough of a lead to get them the overall win, but the new set up and the bigger engines made the boat skate sideways before digging in and sending it into a dangerous spin. …
