Eagles Aiming for Play-Off Victory with 'Great' Prince

FAB FLOURNOY insists he is privileged and humbled to have played alongside Charles Smith - for him one of the most underrated players and best all-round scorers in BBL history.

With basketball intelligence "through the roof", he reckons the 'Prince' is a "great fit, a formidable player" and, at times, the best coach at the Newcastle Eagles.

The BBL Championship winners travel to Leicester Riders tonight (7pm) for the first leg of their play-off semi-final, with the return at Sport Central on Sunday (4pm).

The winners face either Sheffield Sharks or Worcester Wolves at Wembley Arena on May 11.

Malik Cooke won the Eagles' players' player of the year award at the club's end-of-season presentation night at Gosforth's Marriott Hotel on Tuesday.

But Smith remains the most influential name on the roster. And Flournoy said: "It is a privilege to play alongside Charles. He is one of the most underrated players in the history of the BBL.

"A lot of people talk about his age and what he can't do but they don't see what everyone who plays the game sees and that is what he can do.

"All around he is one of the best scorers in the BBL. He can do everything - he can shoot three points, he can shoot free throws, he is agile and quick-thinking and he is a formidable threat.

"It has been humbling to be part of his story in the BBL.

"I have played alongisde Charles and to play alongside someone who does not lose their focus or competitive edge every day is really a privilege.

"He is smart as well. He will be able to work out how to beat most of the teams in the BBL.

"His basketball IQ is through the roof and, to be honest, he sometimes coaches the team better than I do in picking up on things that we can do to beat teams. …
