Education Is under Threat; Views of the North

MICHAEL Watts offers us an opinion, two questions and an assertion without even the pretence of any evidence to support his views (Letters, April 29).

The opinion is irrelevant, but let me answer his questions and offer some evidence to counter his assertion.

"What sane person would want to spend Easter weekend cooped up in a conference?" he asks. Well, (aside from the fact they weren't "cooped up") the sort of people who are concerned about the education of our young people.

And, answering his own question about who will benefit from the planned teachers' strike, he asserts that it won't be the pupils and parents.

However, the reality is that Michael Gove's education reforms are making teachers' jobs impossible and directly harming children's education.

So the NUT's 'Stand Up For Education' campaign is about building support for our campaign with parents and carers. And we are finding that when we explain our case they largely do agree with us. …
